The Watchtower
Cancer Sun and Aquarius Moon
This is the combination of my grandmother who was a gentle and forbidding woman, as well as my best friend’s mother who’s had stark phases of dependance and independence in her life. Cancer Suns have a great ability to close if needed and this is what differentiates them from the other water signs, Scorpio and Pisces. They keep watch on this little pearl inside themselves, where they touch their own innocence, and this fossilization of their child-selves persists with them throughout their lives. With an Aquarius Moon this Cancer pearl is deeply protected, even hidden away entirely from the self. Cancer is the very symbol of the Moon yet Aquarius is in quincunx or unevenly matched to Cancer and so there is a misunderstanding between them. That the most gentle and pure and lasting part of the self, what is really most valuable to the person, is repressed or even denied is the quandary between such a Moon as Aquarius underneath the umbrella of a Cancer Sun. The Aquarius Moon creates a plateau of observation and self-protection at a very young age, and there’s a distance between the child and his parents just naturally. But as the person ages, the plateau within can stretch higher and higher until an exile from the heart occurs. This person must experience a kind of laceration from the outside, which creates deep rumbles within, and eventually knocks them into the deep lake embrace Cancer so aptly represents. Then they must identify that it is their own innocence, their joy of each moment, that’s gone barren for so long. Once such a reconciliation with self occurs, the softness they have so dearly protected becomes accessible, and the sweetness and authenticity which is rightfully theirs shines through. Then even the brighter qualities of the Aquarian Moon emerge, that of being responsible, cool-headed, and unbelievably accepting. Such a period of self-exile and reconciliation is cyclical with them. Sometimes they must take a trip to ignite it. The Cancer Sun Aquarius Moon is an odd combination, as is anyone with an Aquarius Moon, but here there’s a real and tangible particularness that is the person’s own way of being, which must be honored. The grandmother I knew never got to experience such redemption, but she had a regality and a visible life of inner processes which was her own despite the bitterness she let cloak her magnificence. Whatever this combination ends up doing in the world will be something to which they are deeply emotionally attached, even if it isn’t obvious. Can be the sciences, library work, or serving lunches at their children’s cafeteria but there is always a secret reason that cannot exactly be called logical. It is more—they understand themselves very, very well—and it is really their secret observant natures they are serving, by going places, integrating in places, joining with people who provide mystical fodder for their consciousnesses. Cursory ambition or financial necessity is not what’s vital, but intuitively knowing the ins and outs of certain worlds is. There must be something they’ve fallen in love with in their own particular worlds to keep them going, as the Water Suns, Cancer being no exception, are moved mainly by devotion. Of course, trust can be an issue. But once close to this person, he or she will not detach from you—at least principally; in a sense they reserve a part of themselves in detachment always. The passing of days is also felt very heavily—or the opposite, too light—sometimes they miss whole periods because of deep moods, and other times an entire day seems a decade. Their life is very deeply ensconced in a mood where the Aquarius Moon is roaming free, like a goddess of the night, wrestling with things, facets, and dreams unseen. They are candid upfront, not easily ruffled, and always thoughtful in response. The Aquarius Moon is capable of seeing deeply without attempting to change or control. There’s great emotional fulfillment once trust is earned and the person can let things be. Once that level of protection is established, the hidden away depths of the Cancer Sun softly emerges, and this person becomes one of the most keen, relaxed, and wise figures you’ll ever know. Here the Moon is waxing three quarters to the full, and so an exemplifier of particular and hard-earned skills.
