The Thinker
Libra Sun and Capricorn Moon
This combination is that of a dear friend of mine, a man with whom I shared not only laughter and many (many) joints but hard times as well, and he was a rock for me. We have here the waxing First Quarter moon in action, the square, which is a hard aspect, belying an inner distress that serves as a fulcrum. They say that squares are harder to detect, coming from within, but unlike the opposition which presupposes the involvement of an other, the square is more about deriving personal power out of stress and contradiction. Here the person is born with the debonair sweetness of the Libra, someone who thrives in interaction with others, is extremely quick and receptive, and is physically and emotionally capable of bearing all kinds of madness. The Libra actually has an extraordinary quality to filter out everything which distresses them, and has an Air sign’s penchant for withdrawing into a mental sphere, enabling them to witness the detriments or rages or projections of another person while intellectually still being present for them. The Libra is all about this balance and this presence. But the Capricorn Moon is like a demon in the dark, the Moon being in its detriment and here deeply challenged by the Libra Sun and its forte, its very existence, which is a magnet for others, a sounding board, and an indication one must thrive in the fray of humankind. The Capricorn Moon means an isolated emotional nature, one that has polar winters, cold fronts, and gets frozen out of even being able to feel its own self. There’s a lot of trauma built up in the body, within the conduit of the family line, to birth a baby with a Capricorn Moon for these people have trauma responses early in life which make them experts at disassociation, withdrawing deep into themselves, and sardonically doing away with empathy and the nuances of emotion for a cold and severely lonely place where they sift through life’s contents, clearly but unemphatically, swaying in the hammock of their own heaviness. The intuition is uncanny, the sense of humor deep and infectious, the desire for another human being’s warmth actually very strong, but they tend to not always be found, these types. And with the pressure of the square this is even more true. The square with any combination creates an aura of tension and unrest, something temperamental and unstable, which is actually the person crossing between two states of awareness through the tough and nearly indigestible sinew that usually separates distinct beings. Such as the moving of the tectonic plates creates fissures which lead to magma rising up in the volcano, so the person with a Sun, Moon square internalizes that level of tension, repression, and eventual outpouring. Against a Sun very much yearning to contribute to the fabric of society and fulfill a meaningful role, especially as a partner, is the Moon or emotional body of the true loner. I was always able to relate and get through to my friend, but we kept our connection at a friend level, and I feel this was very soothing to him, for deeper relationships were hard. These people have serious things to battle and integrate which are very difficult, which involve giving too much when they should have protected themselves, and taking on the sins of others, as Libras tend to do, before they realize how much they are hurt. It is hard for them to know themselves—they’re vulnerable to trends, projections, and the winds of the moment, as all Libras so beautifully are, but the Capricorn Moon forces this cold diamond-like precision of criticism over their moments like a cloud. They are profound humorists. But Libra-Capricorn would do well to nurture themselves and practice self-validation when they come to a place of isolation, finding comfort and warmth in solitary rituals that are their own. Their immune systems can be at stake with the changeable Moon in the sign of permanence and definite structure. It’s not a very free place to feel yourself. There’s a lot of guilt there, stored and unspoken about for many years, and there’s this heaviness that might have been the influence of one parent or other, or perhaps much older than that, inherited from a militant grandfather—who can say? But this person has much to add to the spectrum of human life, when he or she finally does return from his or her cold planet, very much like the death and rebirth of the Scorpio—however Capricorn winces from the rebirth process, and decides to carry around what’s heavy, not speaking about it. Capricorn after all is the figure of Saturn who does not die but is sentenced to this atrophied underneath life. The fear of never passing on or being redeemed is real with any Capricorn Moon—and they are intensely earthy, stuck-earthy, time-warped earthy. Like gnarled roots, with an uncanny old strength. Their dreams and astral powers have been hurt by the spit out words of dogmatic figures in their life or the coldness of their mothers. They sometimes fail to dream. But there’s redemption in all of us, and especially for this person, who eventually comes into this power of being the King of Earth himself, or herself, the King of Pentacles, the Devil card par excellence (a confusing concept but actually the Earth Master), and every submersion into loneliness deepens the gravity and space available in this person’s heart. Life is colorful and deeply worked for, and the person enjoys making a drastic decision now and then and closing a door so as to wait, with the patience he or she is known for, for a window to open.
