Sagittarius Sun and Capricorn Moon
With this upstanding combination of dignity and privacy, we have the Sun in its lowest daylit hours of the year, just before the Winter Solstice, paired with the Moon of Winter, forming a cold waxing crescent shape in the sky. These people are as childlike as they are wise. The gaiety and optimism typical of Sagittarius goes under a sober, limiting check with a Capricorn Moon. The Sagittarius-Capricorn is a lover of mirth and mischief, but only because that kind of curiosity tends to uncover and lay bare to the light what is sinister, dark, or heartbreaking, and that’s a relief to someone prone to negative spirals and karmic happenings. This person will fray pray to such things unless leading with a loving heart. His or her journey is primarily between openings and closings of the heart—all his or her wisdom is connected to it. So, the person positions his or herself like the heart, behind protection immovable as the rib cage. Only, with their eyes will they profess their hidden away vulnerability. For the most part it is all repressed. This is a complex, formidable pairing, tough, with deep powers of tenacity. He or she enjoys withholding and can stretch scarcity, if need be. The Capricorn Moon is one of Detriment, limits that arise up from within, to temper the emotional life and confine it. Interestingly, it’s the limitation itself that soothes the person. Within confined spaces their focus digs down deep and they uncover the treasures of mind they’re searching for, they find the keys to open their hearts. No one can match their joy then. But they have to keep doing this, cyclically, continuously, as a Capricorn Moon is indicative of the heart closing, and atrophy, the icy heart. But Sagittarius is the warming fire, known for its recklessness, even this person is not immune to riding dreams of enthusiasm into new situations. Yet—suddenly, in the fray, their heart might fail them. They have known and practiced the art of retraction and retracing. Shadow work better pleases them for that reason than spotlight, as they are more free to move backwards and forwards as they learn, go forth, hesitate, and take respite. The Eastern practice of karate would be helpful, training a sense of power as protection—an idea the Sagittarius-Capricorn can understand. She or he is actually a wonderful collaborator, tending to find that when alone, the tendency to self-criticism is too overwhelming. If the power to commit or see something through is too triggering or daunting, or if the person feels stuck—Capricorn Moons know the feeling of being trapped—travel and getting away from routine can be the cure. Sagittarius is the sign of the eternal seeker, the adventurer, he who observes. Great joy wells up in the person’s heart over seeing new places or uncovering new facets of the world, from a point of observation. It is sometimes the participation that brings about unexpected gloom. This the combination of the sage, the wise person, the one peaceful in the sunlight. But understanding the darker aspects of life and particularly the past—let the Capricorn Sun climb the ladder of success, but Capricorn Moons tend to get obsessive over the past, legacies, ancient civilizations, people whose lives are finished. They love to learn in that controlled environment where all the answers are already before you. The day to day, changeable world leaves the person too much on his or her guard. Yet, being part of the world is as important as research or immersion elsewhere. And when this person does participate, they combine both fervor and sober-mindedness, at once, and their finished projects end up being mature and multifaceted. This is a pairing of both exploration and long periods of stopping and considering. In love, these people tend to wait until the object of their affection or a person who falls in love with them makes the first move. They can be hard to connect with. The person who loves them must understand that periods of gloom are natural and happen during lulls between the flare of new passions. The person is aware of the sorrow that flows beneath our feet, uniting us all in bones and sad stories, but for that reason and more she or her values this experience under the sun, and love not least of all. When attached, they are devoted partners. Sagittarians are stereotyped to have wandering eyes, but I, personally, hope to refute that. They settle when they are ready, and having a strong home base to return to after myriad wanderings and explorations and projects is not something the person would undervalue. Jupiter is the planet of Sagittarius, the planet of expansion, but also the law, and it seems when the Sagittarius and particularly the Sagittarius-Capricorn settles down, she or he finds that within a confine there is infinite region to soar. Jupiter is also the benevolent Father, as Saturn is the strict father—both of which unite in this person to make for the most serious and yet supportive parent or friend. Because of their own troubles, the Sagittarius-Capricorn has a great love and talent for lifting others up. I was privileged to have been close to two different females of this nature in my life, both of whom were arresting and sincere, loved to laugh but on their faces, a touch of sorrow.
